Snap Launches Its Specs Augmented Reality Glasses in Los Angeles

Snap is holding the launch event for Specs, its consumer augmented reality glasses, in Los Angeles on Wednesday. The product arrives after more than a decade of internal development and several limited developer-only versions, and the company is positioning it between lightweight AI glasses already on the market and heavier mixed-reality headsets.

The launch lands against improving platform numbers. Snapchat reported 971 million monthly active users with 493 million opening the app daily, and revenue rose 19% year over year to $1.60 billion on stronger advertising and growth in subscriptions. Snap also announced a change in business leadership earlier this month, naming Ronan Harris chief commercial officer.

For investors, the question is whether Specs becomes a durable hardware line or a costly brand halo. Snap has spent heavily on AR for years without a mass-market device, and margins, developer adoption, and pricing disclosed at the event will determine how the market treats the spending going forward.
