AI Infrastructure Names Slide After Amodei Calls for a Development Slowdown

Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei published a lengthy essay on X calling for a slower pace of advancement in artificial intelligence, arguing that safety work needs time to catch up with gains in model capability and that stronger checks should be built around advanced systems. OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman voiced support for the position, and xAI's Elon Musk said Amodei was right. The unusual alignment among rival labs is what gave the message market weight.

The selling was immediate and global. Nasdaq futures fell 1.8%, with premarket declines in Nvidia and Intel leading the move. In Asia, SK Hynix closed down more than 6% and Samsung Electronics fell more than 4%, while SoftBank, among the largest investors in OpenAI, dropped 10% in Tokyo. The S&P 500 slipped to 7,619, down 0.50% from the prior session.

The concern for hardware suppliers is second-order rather than immediate. Super Micro Computer pointed to an order book of roughly $60 billion alongside fiscal 2026 net sales of $39.1 billion, and those commitments do not reset on an essay. What a coordinated slowdown would change is the shape of the order book beyond the current cycle, since server demand ultimately tracks the pace at which frontier models are trained and deployed. Investors are repricing that duration, not the backlog already booked.
