Airline Stocks Slide as Rebounding Crude Revives Fuel-Cost Worries

Airline shares came under pressure Thursday as oil's renewed climb reignited concerns about fuel costs. American Airlines fell more than 3% and Delta Air Lines slipped about 1.3%, giving back part of the sector's recent run to multiyear highs that had been fueled by hopes of a resolution to the Iran conflict.

Fuel remains the swing factor for the group's 2026 economics. Delta has said it expects fuel costs to run about $4 billion higher this year than in 2025, and carriers across the industry have been offsetting the pressure through higher fares, capacity discipline and a growing premium-cabin mix.

With crude prices whipsawing on each turn in the Hormuz negotiations, airline investors are likely to stay focused on headlines from the region as much as on operational performance in the weeks ahead.
