American Airlines shares fell about 4% to $12.06 on Friday, erasing the prior session's post-earnings rebound. Delta slipped about 3% to $76.80 and United about 3% to $98.62 as crude oil climbed to a five-month high.
American reported record third-quarter revenue of $16.3 billion, up 19.3%, but jet fuel expense rose 67.5% to $4.63 billion. The company now expects a full-year adjusted loss of $1.00 to $1.60 per share and assumes about $4.70 per gallon for jet fuel in the fourth quarter.
With $29.6 billion in debt and finance leases, American is seen as more exposed to fuel prices than Delta or United.
