American Airlines Reshuffles Leadership as Delta Profit Gap Widens
American Airlines announced seven executive changes on August 12 as management moves to reset strategy and address persistent profitability shortfalls. The reshuffle follows a second quarter in which the carrier posted net income of $71 million, down 88% from the prior-year period.
The results stand in sharp contrast to Delta Air Lines, which generated $1.6 billion in profit over the same quarter, opening a gap of roughly $1.5 billion between the two carriers. American reported a net margin of 0.4%, approximately one-nineteenth of Delta's figure. American shares fell 7.0% over the past week, closing Friday at $14.83.
Delta closed recently at $91.31 and has guided to mid-teens revenue growth for the September quarter with an operating margin between 11% and 13%. Analyst coverage reflects the divergence: Delta carries 17 buy or strong-buy recommendations with no holds or sells, and a mean price target of $108.59.
