BP Upgraded to Overweight by JPMorgan on Balance Sheet Progress

BP shares closed up 3.23% on September 23 after JPMorgan upgraded the stock to Overweight from Neutral and raised its price target, pointing to progress on balance sheet repair and restructuring. Wall Street's average price target on BP now sits at $49.09, with estimates ranging from $41 to $64.

The upgrade credits BP's efforts to deleverage and streamline its upstream operations, alongside a strategy of limiting Middle East exposure. The company reported annual revenue of $189.34 billion and continues to pursue asset sales, including a stake sale in the Browse LNG project, as part of its broader restructuring.

Analysts pointed to strong free cash flow potential and competitive refining operations as supports for BP's shareholder distributions going forward, even as the company manages commodity-price sensitivity and ongoing divestments.
