Chevron Unveils Multibillion-Dollar Plan to Double Venezuela Oil Output
Chevron has committed to a multibillion-dollar plan to roughly double its crude oil production in Venezuela over the coming years, betting it can manage the country's sanctions exposure and political risk in exchange for long-term output growth. The announcement, disclosed September 26, comes as crude prices firmed on Strait of Hormuz shipping concerns and renewed diplomatic talk between the U.S. and Iran, a combination that has lifted sentiment across integrated oil majors.
Chevron shares traded near $204 in the days surrounding the announcement, having climbed toward record levels earlier in the month alongside strengthening crude prices. The company also pointed to increased exploration spending, calling the Permian Basin a domestic "cornerstone" that will run alongside its international megaprojects, including the expanded Venezuela push.
The move underscores how integrated energy companies are balancing geopolitical risk with production growth as global crude markets stay volatile heading into the fourth quarter.
