Coca-Cola Holds Firm as PepsiCo Drops 3% in Staples Selloff

PepsiCo fell about 3% on September 18 with no earnings release or company announcement to explain the move, deepening a year-to-date decline of roughly 7%. Coca-Cola slipped just 0.31% on the same session and the broad consumer staples sector ETF was close to unchanged.

The divergence suggests the selling was specific to PepsiCo rather than a broader repricing of beverage names or of defensive consumer stocks generally. Keurig Dr Pepper also eased modestly, but nothing in the tape pointed to a sector-wide catalyst.

Coca-Cola has been ranked the strongest growth name among the largest consumer staples companies in recent quantitative screens, placing it ahead of Costco, Walmart, PepsiCo and Procter & Gamble. Walmart remains the largest staples company by market value at roughly $888 billion.
