Delta Pulls Ahead as Airline Stocks Split Into Winners and Laggards

Delta Air Lines is emerging as the clear leader among U.S. carriers in 2026, with shares up roughly 24.5% year to date and trading near $91. Investors are rewarding resilient travel demand, premium cabin revenue growth and disciplined capacity management, along with the high-margin loyalty revenue generated by Delta's American Express partnership. The company recently raised its dividend 15% and reaffirmed its full-year outlook after an earnings beat.

The picture is starkly different at American Airlines, which has lagged the group sharply this year. Analysts point to the carrier's heavy debt load and negative stockholders' equity, which amplify investor concern whenever fuel prices spike, as they have during the recent standoff over the Strait of Hormuz.

The divergence underscores how the airline trade has become a stock picker's market: carriers with premium revenue and strong balance sheets are absorbing higher fuel costs, while more leveraged names remain hostage to the oil tape.
