Fed Minutes Flag Possible Tightening as Jackson Hole Nears
Minutes from the Federal Reserve's July meeting, released Wednesday afternoon, showed many participants assessed that policy tightening would likely be necessary if inflation did not decline. The committee left rates unchanged at 3.50%-3.75% in July, but the decision drew three dissents, with regional presidents Logan, Hammack and Kashkari each voting for a quarter-point hike.
Stocks shrugged off the hawkish tone, with the S&P 500 adding 0.21% to close at 7,707.98 and the Dow rising about 120 points as long-term yields retreated from their recent two-decade highs.
Attention now turns to the Jackson Hole Economic Policy Symposium, running August 27-29 under the theme of financial innovation and payments, where Chair Warsh is expected to speak. Markets will parse his remarks for any signal on the rate path into the fall.
