Freeport-McMoRan Climbs as Tariffs Tighten U.S. Copper Supply

Freeport-McMoRan shares advanced as copper prices strengthened on tariff-driven dislocations and tightening supply signals in the U.S. market. With 50% levies on imported copper products in effect since August 1, domestic prices have pushed to records as buyers hoard metal and cross-border supply chains adjust.

As the largest U.S.-based copper producer, Freeport is widely seen as a beneficiary of the premium American copper now commands over global benchmarks. Morgan Stanley recently raised its price target on the stock, citing the tariff tailwind, and the company has emphasized flexibility across its global processing and refining network as trade measures evolve.

The setup remains volatile: tariff policy shifts have whipsawed the stock in recent months, and copper's premium could compress if supply chains adapt faster than expected. For now, tightening inventories and firm industrial demand continue to support the domestic price.
