Gartner Warns of a $4.9 Trillion AI Revenue Gap as Infrastructure Spending Surges

Gartner estimates AI providers will spend nearly $1 trillion on AI infrastructure in 2026 and about $6 trillion more from 2027 through 2030. Earning a 12% return on that capital would require roughly $8.5 trillion in cumulative revenue through 2030, while Gartner forecasts no more than $3.6 trillion, a shortfall of at least $4.9 trillion.

The firm expects more than 80% of neocloud providers to stop operating independently by 2030, and says more than $3.5 trillion of AI infrastructure spending could face write-down risk. Providers with diversified businesses are seen as better placed than pure-play neoclouds.

For investors, the report adds to the debate over whether AI hardware demand can be sustained at current levels, a theme relevant to server and chip suppliers.
