Home Depot Beat Sets the Tone for Walmart's Thursday Report
Home Depot reported fiscal second-quarter sales of $47.86 billion on Tuesday, up 5.7% and ahead of the roughly $47.27 billion analysts expected. Adjusted earnings of $4.92 a share topped the $4.73 consensus, and the company reaffirmed its full-year guidance. Shares rose about 2% in premarket trading before the broader market turned lower.
The composition of the beat matters more than the headline. Management said repair and maintenance demand carried the quarter while big-ticket remodels stayed weak, with elevated interest rates still discouraging loan-funded projects. The chief financial officer described customers as having the means to spend but remaining hesitant, and said the company is still operating in what it calls frozen housing market conditions.
For Dyatome Capital's consumer holdings, the read-through is a cautious one. Walmart reports Thursday, August 20, with guidance calling for constant-currency net sales growth of 4% to 5% and adjusted earnings of $0.72 to $0.74 a share. A similar pattern of steady staples volume alongside soft discretionary spending would be consistent with what Home Depot described, and would also frame expectations for Kroger's second-quarter report later this quarter.
