Nike Trades Near 52-Week Low as China Sales and Costs Weigh

Nike shares closed at $41.23 this week, hovering just above the $40.00 bottom of a 52-week range that tops out at $80.17. The stock has roughly halved from its high over the past year, leaving the sportswear company with a market capitalization near $61.6 billion. Wall Street's average 12-month price target sits at $50.66, but the ratings mix is split — 12 analysts rate the shares a buy against three sells, producing an overall neutral consensus.

The pressure is most visible in China, once Nike's strongest growth engine, where sales have fallen about 30%. Domestically the picture is also softening: rising prices in categories such as children's footwear have pushed families to trade down or delay purchases, a dynamic consistent with the weak consumer sentiment reading released Friday.

There has also been movement in the finance organization. Chief Accounting Officer Johanna Nielsen has announced her resignation effective September 4, with Chief Financial Officer David Denton assuming interim controller responsibilities. Separately, Nike declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.41 per share with an ex-dividend date of September 1.
