Silver Tops $100 an Ounce for the First Time
Silver breached the $100-per-ounce mark for the first time on record, climbing nearly 4% in morning trading to $100.10. The milestone extends a historic run for precious metals that has made materials one of the market's leading sectors this year.
The rally is flowing directly into silver producers' financials. Hecla Mining recently reported operating cash flow up 61% year over year to $175 million, with free cash flow more than doubling to $136 million and consolidated cash costs running deeply negative on byproduct credits. Pan American Silver and other primary producers stand to benefit similarly from prices at these levels.
Analysts note the move has been driven by investment demand, industrial consumption from solar and electronics, and constrained mine supply. Whether prices hold above the triple-digit threshold is now a key question for the sector heading into the fall.
