Snap Faces Mounting Regulatory Pressure Over Youth Safety
Snap shares fell 5.35% on September 23, sliding to around $5.29, as regulatory scrutiny over youth safety intensified on multiple fronts. Pennsylvania's Attorney General sued the company, alleging that Snapchat is "addictive for children" and fails to adequately protect minors, seeking court-ordered changes to the app's design and disclosures.
The lawsuit landed alongside a new California law restricting infinite scroll and chatbot companion features for users under 16, forcing platforms to redesign teen-focused engagement tools. In the European Union, a proposed Kids Act would go further still, banning social media access for children under 13 and imposing strict parental controls for early teens.
The pressure comes as Snap posted quarterly revenue of about $1.60 billion alongside a net loss of roughly $164 million. Analysts note that new design requirements aimed at reducing addictive features could weigh further on user engagement, ad impressions, and already-thin profitability.
