SpaceX Absorbs Second Lockup Wave as 319 Million Shares Unlock

SpaceX shares slipped this week as the company's second post-IPO lockup expiration took effect on August 20, releasing up to 319 million previously restricted shares held by current and former employees and early investors. The tranche expands the tradable float by roughly 20%.

The release follows an initial unlock of up to 911.5 million shares on August 6, which the stock absorbed with a gain of about 6% that day. By Friday, shares had steadied around $135 in early trading as investors digested the added supply. Five more waves are scheduled — roughly 319 million additional shares on September 9, with further releases through October 24 before the full 180-day lockup ends December 8.

By year-end, approximately 4.9 billion shares are expected to be unlocked in total. Elon Musk's stake, the largest single block, remains locked until June 2027, a structure designed to avoid flooding the market all at once.
