United's Q2 Beat Overshadowed by Fuel Costs — a Warning Shot for Airlines
United Airlines reported second-quarter results ahead of Wall Street estimates, posting adjusted earnings of $1.99 per share versus the $1.88 expected, on revenue of $17.67 billion. Despite the beat on both lines, shares slipped roughly 4% in after-hours trading Wednesday.
The culprit was fuel. United said higher fuel prices could add nearly $6 billion to its expenses this year compared with what it projected at the start of 2026, and its second-quarter fuel bill rose 84% from a year earlier to $2.3 billion, driven by oil's climb amid renewed U.S.-Iran tensions.
The read-through matters for the rest of the sector. American Airlines, which reports on July 23, trades near its 52-week high, and investors will be watching whether it and peers like Delta can offset the same fuel headwinds with strong summer demand.
