UPS Shares Slide 4.2% as Fuel Costs, Diesel Export Ban Fears Mount
UPS shares fell 4.21% on September 24 to close at $91.79, pressured by surging crude and refined-product prices tied to stalled U.S.-Iran talks at the UN General Assembly. Trade groups have also warned the White House that a proposed U.S. diesel export ban could restrict refined-product flows and strain long-haul freight networks, adding another layer of cost uncertainty for logistics operators.
UPS's weekly, index-based fuel surcharge mechanism lags rapidly rising diesel and jet fuel spot prices, which pressures near-term margins even as the surcharge eventually catches up. As the share price has fallen, UPS's dividend yield has climbed above 7%, drawing investor attention to the sustainability of the payout.
The combination of fuel volatility and policy uncertainty leaves UPS navigating a difficult cost environment heading into peak shipping season.
