Wall Street Posts Its Worst Week Since June as Nasdaq Slides 4.5%
U.S. stocks ended a volatile week lower on Friday, with the Nasdaq Composite closing at 26,140.03 for a weekly loss of 4.5%, ending a four-week winning streak. The S&P 500 finished at 7,659.44, down about 2% on the week, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 52,002.41.
The Dow was the outlier, gaining 0.7% for the week and extending its winning streak to two weeks as investors leaned toward blue-chip and defensive names. Technology bore the brunt of the selling, with nearly all S&P 500 tech constituents finishing lower on Friday.
Energy was a bright spot, with Exxon up 2.5% and Chevron up 2.6% as Brent crude climbed to roughly $110 a barrel. With earnings season in full swing, analysts say upcoming reports must show profits can support valuations amid high energy costs and tighter financing.
