Walmart COO Shakeup Puts Premium Valuation Under the Microscope
Walmart's U.S. chief operating officer Kieran Shanahan has stepped down, with international COO Kyle Kinnard — a 25-year company veteran who formerly ran the U.S. health and wellness division — set to succeed him. Shares traded between roughly $113.60 and $118.09 this week, outperforming the S&P 500.
The transition lands as investors debate Walmart's premium multiple of about 40 times trailing earnings. Bulls point to the higher-margin growth engines: global advertising climbed 37% in the first quarter, membership-fee income rose 17.4% and e-commerce grew 26%.
Competition is not letting up, with rivals cutting prices and Walmart leaning further into retail media and membership to defend margins. CEO John Furner says the company is focused on growing higher-margin commerce solutions.
