Walmart Holds Near $107 as Analysts Trim Targets and CEO Sells Shares
Walmart closed at $106.85 on Monday, up 0.1% and modestly trailing a broader market that finished sharply higher. The shares moved within a narrow intraday band, continuing a pattern of range-bound trading that has persisted through September.
Two items have drawn attention. Consensus analyst price targets have been reduced to roughly $131.88 following a round of cuts, and a Securities and Exchange Commission filing disclosed that John R. Furner, director, president and chief executive, sold 13,125 shares on September 17 for approximately $1.4 million. Scheduled executive sales are routine and do not necessarily signal a view on the business.
Competitor Kroger offers a contrast in positioning. Its shares trade roughly 26% below a 52-week high of $76.58 set in March despite closing 2.7% higher after second-quarter results earlier this month. Kroger has appointed Mark Ibbotson, previously a senior operator at Walmart and Asda, as chief store operations officer effective September 14.
