Walmart Slips as Mexican Unit's Profit Drop Flags Consumer Caution
Walmart shares edged lower after its Mexican unit, Walmex, reported a decline in second-quarter profit and warned of softening consumer spending. The stock closed near $108.40 on Thursday and traded around $109 Friday, down more than 6% over the past month and underperforming the S&P 500.
The Walmex warning adds to scrutiny of Walmart's premium valuation, with the stock trading at roughly 40 times earnings, and comes as the company navigates a COO transition. Technical indicators show shares below their 20-, 50-, and 200-day moving averages.
Even so, Walmart outperformed the broader market this week, and some analysts see a floor forming near current levels after a 6.7% six-month slide. The consumer-spending signal from Mexico will keep attention on U.S. traffic trends into the next earnings report.
